I got in the Discord for the dev for 'World of Synnabar' for the rerelease. I got out because the dev wanted to double down on almost everything people had problems with rather than fix them. He was also a conspiracy theorist of the first water, and a rude bastard if you didn't agree with every word he said.

I'm beginning to suspect that World of Synnabar is the product of a Vogon prose-poet. And it (Synnabar itself, the world ship within the RPG) would benefit from a scheduled visitation from a Vogon Constructor Fleet to turn it into a Hyperspace Bypass.

FATAL. Any person with a shred of decency thinks that it was written (poorly) by a psychopath, for degenerates. RUclips, however, has no problem with it, at all. Just something to keep in mind when you see a "Blue Context Box".

Phoenix Command sounds more like a system for a turn-based tactical combat video game rather than a tabletop game. If you have a computer doing all these calculations for you on the fly, it could make for a really cool game, but otherwise? Forget it.

As stated in the review - Phoenix Command isn't an RPG. It started as the combat system for a couple of RPGs (and for serveral more in its basic version), but it's definitely a set of Skirmish Wargame rules - the front of the book calls it a 'Small Arms Combat System'. A couple of points in its favor... the basic version isn't bad in terms of difficulty, is short, and doesn't play slower than quite a lot of RPGs when using their advanced rules... and also, the actual hit location and damage rules are surprisingly simple and quick to use, and since they work on base 3d6 stats and swords do 1d8 you can slot them into a lot of other RPGs, which is a great way to teach players who complain about a lack of realism.

WHAT THE FUCK AM I LISTENING TO???

I'm trying to make my own fantasy RPG, which when I describe it is either "GURPS with so many houserules it's basically D&D" or "D&D with so many houserules it's basically GURPS". Still going back and forth with myself if basic ability checks (which in turn are the basis of the skill, magic, and combat systems) should be roll-under with modifiers to the target number, or roll-over with difficulty set BY target number. One is more intuitive to me for bookkeeping, the other more intuitive in the moment to moment play as a player. Why should such a system even exist? Because the main character I project as my online persona is clearly bound by some sort of Tabletop RPG system, but no existing ruleset fits his world perfectly. Because most of my videogame development projects are confined to a small list of interconnected fantasy worlds and their histories with a shared set of magic systems, and one of those is the world he's from. Because I'm addicted to worldbuilding and lore and flavor text and find both that and crunchy game stats with hard numbers and randomization mechanics innately fun for their own sake.

Good lord, that Cinnabar book opening crawl is so pointlessly 1950s-60s sci-fi it hurts. I don't get why the writer didn't space it out over the entire book.

What the Scientology is this nonsense? I actually remember when World of Siynnabar (1993) hit the shelves at the book store I worked at. I skimmed it a couple times, but couldn't make heads nor tails of it. If memory serves, we were the victim of a snatch & grab, and someone stole the books along with other stuff. We were insured, so it probably worked out for the best.

I don't know if you've ever played Legend of the Five Rings RPG, but you ought to review that. It's one of the deadliest RPGs I've ever played, and that's coming from someone who loves Traveller.

I want to get into the World of Darkness tabletop RPG, I really enjoyed the game Bloodlines.

I don't know what's more impressive, the fact that the publishers of Sinibar thought they could ban GMs from changing the rules or them being unhinged enough to think they could enforce this nonsense to begin with.

Ah, the classics! My first encounter with WoD. Sophomore year of high-school, in a mythology class (that got cancelled during the second semester.) It was Werewolf, and my first thought was like Hammer and Universal monsters, more about the individual. Then tribes were thrown at me. I was into Led Zep at the time, so I was drawn to Fianna, though later I found preference for Shadow Lords. Funny thing is, I usually knew people who wanted to play Vampire instead of Werewolf, so I only got to play Werewolf twice. Side note: I know the Highlander supliment was fan-made, bit is there any chance you'll go over it, if only to discuss why or why not it works in WoD?

Listening to this... Mummy and Wraith have a fair amount of overlap with Geist. Guess if I didn't latch onto Geist, one of those would be where I would have ended up in WoD.
